This is a recorded conversation with a teaching colleague, Lauren, who works as the Math Department Chair at St. James Academy in San Diego. Since the beginning of the pandemic, and especially in California since the stay at home order on March 17th, teachers have done the incredible in teaching their students at a distance. Lauren shares her experiences at her school, reflections, and thoughts on the current state of education.

A school graduation is supposed to be unforgettable - people from all over coming together to celebrate a moment that most students cherish for the rest of their lives. Now with the pandemic, we are forced to graduate within the comforts of our home, yet we feel more disconnected than ever. Restaurants and bars across the state are struggling to stay in business and some establishments, like Calicraft Brewing Company, are finding creative ways to drive business despite the difficult conditions. When I saw an image of this front page on the internet, I thought it was from 100 years ago. And then I got my copy. Every year on the date, the 3,000 victims of September 11th are read aloud at the World Trade Center. It takes 3 hours. If we were to read the names of each person who has died of Covid-19 so far, it would take over 4 days, without stopping. It would cover each Sunday issue for over the next two years. Today I read 1% of those names. Each of those names was allowed half a sentence to describe them. Half a sentence for a lifetime on the front page of The New York Times. Taking my grandmother Janice Simon to lunch at Denny's as shelter-in-place orders are lifted. The staff is wearing masks and every-other table is closed. All utensils and plates are disposable. Everyone there was so excited to be there.

Shelter in place has been lifted. This photograph is the first time my children have been allowed in public with masks. We went to a local bakery "Famous Creations" for cupcakes. The boys (Levi and Canyon) were excited to see strangers and choose a treat. As we were there several other families arrived but stayed far apart from each-other.

There is a path marked for patrons that guide people from the door, then counter, then pick up, then exit out a different door. There is plexi-glass around the entire work area. The employees have a log-in station by the front door where they must wait until another barista comes to take their temperature before they are allowed to work (with a mask).

This is the last normal day I had as a teacher. We were talking about covid-19 earlier and I read the students the current numbers. One student asked me if I thought they would close our school. I told him it was a long way off and not to worry. I took this photo to sent to the principal because yet again my classroom was filled beyond capacity with students sharing chairs and students at my desk. This was the last photo I have on my phone of a normal day, an hour later it was announced that our district was closing schools. As the students left the teachers yelled after them to keep in touch, we would figure it all out, and we loved them. You can see the life of these students. So much energy and light. I miss them terribly.

I am a parent advocate for Kawasaki Disease. I have given talks at symposiums for parents, groups and doctors and run the Kawasaki Disease Northern California Facebook pages. Levi my son is a 2X survivor and had Kawasaki shock syndrome the first time it nearly took his life. He is 11 now and wants to help me educate the community. About a month ago doctors in the UK announced a Kawasaki like illness in children who were diagnosed with Covid-19. Since that time I have received numerous messages and phone calls from concerned community members. This video was made to alleviate fears and encourage people to donate to read watch that has begun at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

It is a pertinent and thoughtful article about what governments take advantage of in times of crises in order to get ahead and an edge on other government entities.

This RollingStone article is one of many that are surfacing on the internet. It is an indictment of Trump's focus during this time of COVID19 crisis. There are numerous frustrations people are express regarding Trump's handling of the crisis, including his excessive and costly golfing habit. For many it exposes Trump's leadership weaknesses as well as his lack of empathy.

It is important to note the burden placed on economic development and enterprise.
