Park Closures

04/06/2020
The sign was posted at a public park and nature area that has continued to stay open throughout the pandemic. The park does get a lot of foot traffic and the sign is there to help people of all age groups help contextualize how far away they should be staying from people while visiting the park.

Within a few days after Gov. DeWine started Ohio's "shelter in place" order, a small arch made of tree limbs appeared in Cumberland Park along Cumberland Road. On a more recent walk, I found that someone had rebuilt the arch on a larger scale. It's interesting to watch for signs of how people do various things to fight boredom.

This post describes an activity related to the peace sign behind it. The post reads "Peace. Please take a power stick. Place it in your yard to remind you of [peace sign] and allow the birds to pick the yarn for their nests." To my mind, this community project shows the need to take actions to combat a sense of futility. Parks are more important than ever in this time when walking outside is one of the only safe ways to be outdoors. It's nice to see the community making an intentional, active use of this park.

Regular walks have taken on new importance for me amid the stress-inducing experience of living in a time of uncertainty. Watching the incremental emergence of spring has been more than a little therapeutic. On April 11, on a walk through Cumberland Park, I noticed that someone had arranged tree limbs into a giant peace sign in a former picnic area. Six days later, I passed by the same spot. Many sticks wrapped in various colors of yarn now lay in the middle of the peace sign, along with a post that explained the purpose of the sticks, inviting people to take a stick home so that birds could pick the yarn for their nests. I like how the community is appropriating spaces in the park to take small actions to restore a sense of agency, however small.

It's been a little over a month since the start of self quarantine and social distancing. New York was said to be reopen on May 1st but been pushed back to May 15th. People, like myself, are starting to feel locked up in their homes, unsure of when this pandemic will truly be over.

This is a response to "A 20 Second Project" (started by Noa Street-Sachs) where she asked people from Minneapolis to Amman Jordan to answer the following question in 20 seconds: 1) Think about 1 year from now. What is a custom/practice/way of interacting that you think may change as a result of this crisis?

A walk on Friday the 13th. I shot out a roll of photographs on a loaded camera I found around the house. I'd never used the camera before and was unfamiliar with the 2 1/4 inch square negative format. I was able to bike into Manhattan and have this single roll of film processed and scanned at a lab, but now that it's closed I have rolls piling up. My aim is to shoot a single 12 exposure roll during each day of shelter in place.

This is a photo I took while walking in the park. It is nothing extraordinary it is just a picture of a leafless tree with several birds nests sitting in its branches. I took it because I remember feeling really off that day. I had that feeling in my stomach and arms, the feeling you get where you are anxious but you do not fully know why. Work was hectic, outside seemed to quiet to be outside and something about this tree captured a normalcy I wished I felt part of at the time. I can not say this virus is what scares me. I am not underestimating the abilities of an illness with no vaccine but I feel if anything, it is people that have scared me. The second it seems that the world is not working in our favor we have turned against one another, hoarded, fought, been unsympathetic in nature to the only other beings that can truly understand how we feel. While all the while, the birds remain unfazed, building their nests in their trees.

Every day when I open my eyes, the first thing I do is open my phone and check my social media. Weibo, a major tool for most Chinese to get the news, shares the tendency of the virus in the first place. As a study abroad student, I got messages from my friends every day to check if I’m okay. I got the message from one of my best friends yesterday to ask if I need some supplies that he can deliver. My parents made a phone call every day to check my status. Every time I got the phone call, I would hear similar words from my parents. For example, stay at home and wash hands frequently. I strictly follow their instruction. I noticed until the day I wrote this journal, the number of people affected in America has reached 570,000. The number may be the reason why everyone is asking me. The number has increased every day, and I saw a big change in the place I live in.
The building I lived in announced that all the delivery no longer can send to the apartment. All the delivery will leave at the front desk. Then, a new announcement came out in the following two days, that there will be someone to send to the doors. In other words, in order to protect everyone, the residences no longer need to go down and pick up their delivery; Instead, a team member will deliver them to the door and wearing masks and gloves. Besides, the elevators only can take four people in time to keep the social distancing. I think all the policies are really responsible and careful to all the residents.
I went to the supermarket this week, as the first time I went out after staying at home for three weeks. I went to H Mart, a Korean supermarket near the place I lived. I was surprised that it also did a really good job of preventing the virus. The market controlled the number entered and lined up all the customers outside. The security will ask all the customers to keep the distance from each other. When I entered the market, and employees gave me a pair of gloves. There is still sufficient food in there. At the checkout, there is a transparency board that isolated the cashiers and customers.
This is what I experience this week and share those in my journal. I hope everyone stays healthy!
