Anti-Vaxers at the South Carolina State House

Title (Dublin Core)

Anti-Vaxers at the South Carolina State House

Description (Dublin Core)

As state Attorney General Alan Wilson held a news conference at the South Carolina Statehouse on December 1st, 2021, more than 100 protestors organized outside the event in hopes of pressuring the House to stop businesses and local governments from issuing their own vaccine mandates. The protestors arrived at the House that Wednesday morning from either car, buses, or transportation sponsored by members of the county party leadership. Several county Republican parties showed up in consolidation for the protestors' efforts, and legislation like the Senate have tried to pass a resolution in April banning employers from mandating COVID-19 vaccinations. These protestors at the House represent one coalition of beliefs that mandating vaccines would encourage anti-discrimination within the public sphere. These protestors also reflect the exterior debate most South Carolina legislators have about adopting new federal law set to pass the following year. Although the journalist, Nicholas Reynolds, argues that the movement lacks a unified message, their efforts have pushed the House to extend a special session that could ultimately turn the tide in COVID-19 legislation. The group planned on meeting for a second rally on December 4th in order to support this session as well as continue to push for COVID-related legislation in the Statehouse by the end of the year.
